Mississippi-born Travis Wammack was a child prodigy on the guitar, cutting his first record at the tender age of 12. As a teenager he moved to Memphis to find work as a session musician, and it was here that he recorded the instrumental "Scratchy", which made it into the Top 100 when released as a single in 1963. By the late 60s he had made the move to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to work at Rick Hall's Fame Studios, and his guitar playing featured on hits by Clarence Carter, Candi Staton, Bobbie Gentry, The Osmonds and others.
In 1972 he was given the chance to record an album of his own, which Hall produced for him. The self-titled album was a great mix of rock and soul styles, and revealed him to be a brilliant singer, with the focus more on his vocals than his guitar (though it was still filled with excellent fretwork of course). It was made up of cover songs, with creative interpretations of numbers originally by The James Gang, Cat Stevens, Clarence Carter, and others, the two most interesting being his funky versions of the evergreen classic "You Are My Sunshine" and Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On", the song which had given FAME their first ever hit way back in 1962.
