Magic Sam - West Side Soul (1967)

Magic Sam was an American blues singer and guitarist.

Born Samuel Gene Maghett in Mississippi, Magic Sam moved to Chicago aged 19 and became part of the city's famous blues scene, eventually getting signed to Cobra Records. It was his 1957 single "All Your Love" that first earned him recognition among his peers (which included Otis Rush and Buddy Guy). His music career was briefly interrupted by a stint in the army. He deserted after two weeks and was sentenced to six months in prison.
During the 60s he toured the US, UK and Germany, and was signed to Delmark Records. His first LP, West Side Soul, did not come out until 1967, ten years after the release of "All Your Love". The wait was well worth it, as it turned out to be an absolutely fantastic blues album, full of energy, highlighted by his high, soulful vocals and his distinctive guitar work. Notable songs included the blues standard "Sweet Home Chicago", a new version of "All Your Love", and the catchy original "That's All I Need", which learned more in the direction of soul than blues. Second guitar throughout the album came from Mighty Joe Young.
