Donovan - What's Bin Did And What's Bin Hid (1965)

Donovan is a British singer-songwriter, who in the 60s emerged from the British folk scene to become a psychedelic pop icon in the 60s.

Scottish-born Donovan Leitch was already well known in British folk circles before he was offered his recording contract in 1964. His early demo tapes show his resemblance to American folk singers such as Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, but by the time he recorded his first album he had begun to develop his own unique sound. What's Bin Did And What's Bin Hid for the most part consists of acoustic folk music peformed solo by Donovan on guitar and harmonica, though a few songs feature some instrumental backing and have a bit of a more jazzy, bluesy vibe. It includes covers of Woody Guthrie's "Car Car", Jane Bower's "Remember The Alamo" (originally recorded by The Kingston Trio) and a few traditionals. However Donovan's talents as a songwriter in his own right were evident even at this early stage. A single version of "Catch The Wind" (recorded with string backing, unlike the solo version on the album) reached #4 in the UK, and was soon being covered by all sorts of artists and bands.
