New Riders Of The Purple Sage - Brujo (1974)

The New Riders Of The Purple Sage are an American country-rock band, with roots in the San Francisco psychedelic scene of the 60s.

In 1974 bassist Dave Torbet left the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. He was replaced by Skip Battin, who had recently been in The Byrds, leading to the lineup of John Dawson (guitar/vocals), David Nelson (guitar/vocals), Skip Battin (bass/vocals), Buddy Cage (pedal steel guitar) and Spencer Dryden (drums/vocals). A very talented bassist, Battin also brought his own quirky songwriting to the band, his songs all collaborations with lyricist Kim Fowley.
Their first album with Battin was 1974's Brujo. It featured four Battin/Fowly originals, three from John Dawson, one from David Nelson (co-written with Robert Hunter), and covers including Bob Dylan's "You Angel You" and Johnnie & Jack's "Ashes Of Love". The result was a fine record, not quite up to the standards of their earlier studio efforts, but nevertheless classic New Riders.
