The Rockets - The Rockets (1968)

The Rockets were a little-known 60s American rock group.

Here’s an obscure 60s release which had quite an important legacy. The Rockets were Danny Whitten (guitar, vocals), George Whitsell (guitar, vocals), Leon Whitsell (guitar), Billy Talbot (bass), Ralph Molina (drums, vocals) and Bobby Notkoff (violin). Whitten, Talbot and Molina had originally begun as part of a doo-wop group called Danny & The Memories, before they moved to San Francisco and joined with Notkoff and the Whitsell brothers to became a rock band. Their one album was released on the small independent label White Whale Records. It was some good psychedelic folk-rock, with a gritty garage sound, and Whitten's songwriting talents were evident even at this early stage. The album was produced by Barry Goldberg. It didn’t sell many copies, but one fan it did earn was Neil Young. He then famously took Whitten, Talbot and Molina and rechristened them Crazy Horse. They appeared on his second album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

This is really cool! You can hear that Crazy Horse sound 'in the mix' ... and the music stands on its own besides, based on these tracks. Great post...

Would love to hear it but I think the link is dead. Can we get it back to life ?
